Born in Rahway, New Jersey, Derrell — affectionately known as “Rellooo Hellooo” — spent time in Roselle before moving out of state, his obituary says.

Derrell played basketball as a Forward before graduating from Freedom High School and earning an associate’s degree from Northampton Community College.

He worked in the Food and Nutrition Department at the Department of Veterans Affairs and at Loves’ Lounge in Allentown.

He also graduated from the Boyz II Men program and frequently visited Abundant Life Family Worship Church with his family.

Above all, Derrell was known for his distinct aura — one that radiated everlasting happiness and kindness, his obituary says.

“No matter where he was, once in the room his energy and smile would brighten up the atmosphere,” reads his memorial. “He loved to laugh and see others laugh.”

Derrell is survived by his loving parents, Jessie and Sonia Kelley; two brothers, Jalen Kelley and Corey Kelley (wife Anelis); a nephew, Niko; his paternal grandparents, Jessie and Dorothy Kelley; his maternal grandparents, Joe and Lillie Hunter; and many extended family members and close friends.

Love’s Lounge was hosting an event in Derrell’s honor with proceeds given to the family held on Wednesday, April 19:

Other tributes poured in for Derrell across social media as well:

“This young man had a personality that sparked and permeated in every setting he encountered,” reads one of several tributes. “His humor, style, and the way he danced. I will cherish those memories and I’ll see you in eternity.”

Derrell’s funeral was scheduled for Wednesday, April 19 at Abundant Life Family Worship Church in New Brunswick.

“Being around his family and friends was a joy for him,” says his obituary. “Whether it was in person or on the phone, he would always end the conversation with ‘I Love You.’ It’s in those special moments that will be forever cherished by everyone he knew and loved.”
